Migration of a multilingual English-Arabic optical store to Magento 2 Commerce Cloud
Lens.me is an online optical shop selling contact lenses for all medical requirements and cosmetic color contact lenses of the most popular brands.
The company behind the brand is Sky Optical, based in Dubai, but with a global vision and market positioning. The Lens.me online store is in 2 languages, English & Arabic. It offers 24/7 in-house customer service, super-fast global delivery, and has over 55.000 products in the catalog.
Lens.me has built a community of loyal customers over the years. They currently have more than 3000 reviews on Trustpilot and a consistent score of 4.8 out of 5 on this customer review platform.
To support their multinational business, Lens.me opted for Magento’s own platform and hosting solution – the Magento Commerce Cloud.
The client approached us with a request to migrate their Magento 1 store to Magento 2 without changes in design or features. In other words, they wanted the same store, with the functionalities they had on their old Magento 1 store, copied and pasted to Magento 2.
A redesign of the website is considered for the near future, which is why our work on this project was focused solely on custom Magento 2 development.
It was a specific website nevertheless. Having both the English and Arabic language versions, we needed to implement both the left-to-right (LTR) and right-to-left (RTL) layouts.
The development work on the LTR and RTL layouts was made from scratch. This is where our rich experience with eCommerce partners from the Middle East proved very useful.
The migration from Magento 1 to Magento 2 included code refactoring and ditching some of the old code, as well as redeveloping some functionalities specific to their business model.
One of those specific functionalities was our custom extension for Magento 2 that allows for selling contact lenses with different powers for either the right or the left eye.
The partner also wanted to have the possibility to show the price of a single lens for some products as well as price by the pack for others. This difference is important for the out-of-stock notification tool, which sends email notifications that a product is back in stock. It behaves differently depending on whether the product is sold as a pack or as a single lens.
As a global business, Lens.me supports multiple currencies, so they wanted us to develop auto-currency selection based on the user’s IP address. Customers can login using their Google or Facebook accounts, which makes the process of creating an account much quicker and easier for the user.
Payment and shipping solutions
A large percentage of Lens.me customers comes from mobile devices, specifically from iOS devices. Integration of Apple Pay as a payment method was therefore a must on this project.
Lens.me also includes a Shipping Calculator Tool that shows the expected delivery date for a specific location using the customer’s IP address as the identifier for calculation.
Once an order is complete and the products are shipped, customers receive SMS notifications with a tracking link to follow the route of the package via Twilio.
Speaking about the results. The first several months after the migration to Magento 2, this online store has an eCommerce Conversion growth of 17% compared with the same period in the year before. Here’s how the overall results look like:
